Rooted in Heritage. Growing for Tomorrow.

For a century, Karunguru Coffee Estate has been home to generations of coffee trees and the people who nurture them. Our story is one of resilience, innovation, and an unbroken devotion to the land.

1928: The Year It Began.

Before the skyline of Nairobi rose, the coffee trees of Karunguru were already taking root.

Founded in 1928 by the Glassford family, the estate was carved out of the rich, high-altitude landscape of the Central Highlands. For decades, it stood as a testament to the potential of Kenyan coffee, establishing the agronomic baseline that defines our territory today.

From The Ridge to Karunguru Estate: A Shared Coffee Legacy

Karunguru Estate’s story is inseparable from the people who first believed in its potential. Long before the name Karunguru became synonymous with quality coffee, this land was known as The Ridge Estate, a pioneering coffee farm established in the early 1920s by George James Glassford, a World War I veteran and ANZAC serviceman who arrived in Kenya from New Zealand in 1919.

Like many post-war settlers of his generation, Glassford came to Kenya seeking renewal. What he found was a ridge of fertile highland soil, dramatic horizons marked by Ol Donyo Sabuk, and a climate uniquely suited to coffee cultivation. He took up the land and immediately began planting coffee, laying the foundations of what would become one of the area’s enduring agricultural estates.

The Foundations of Quality

From the outset, quality coffee was central to The Ridge’s identity. Glassford planted his first coffee trees close to where he intended to build his home, allowing the estate to grow organically around both family life and farming practice. By the mid-1920s, the coffee had begun to produce, sustaining the farm even through the global depression when many other commodities faltered.
Processing was done on the farm using the methods of the time: coffee measured in kerosene tins, bagged, processed, and sun-dried on site. These early practices established a culture of hands-on quality control, attentiveness to detail, and respect for the crop; principles that would outlast any single owner.

The Ridge was never just a farm-it was a community. The Glassfords lived alongside, worked with, and depended on generations of Kenyan staff. These relationships reflect a deeper truth about the estate: coffee here has always grown through human relationships, not just agricultural output.

The Land Remembers

Following George Glassford’s death in 1954, the estate continued under family stewardship until the early 1960s, when ownership transitioned. But the land itself retained its identity. The same ridge. The same microclimate. The same potential for excellence. It welcomed stewards who would honour what came before while building something greater.

A Legacy Reborn: Heritage Meets Innovation

The true spirit of Karunguru was forged in 1974. In a defining moment of Kenyan history, the estate passed into the stewardship of founder Geoffrey Karekia Kariithi and Mrs. Mary Wangeci Kariithi. They inherited more than 300 acres of coffee trees; they inherited a tradition of quality that demanded to be continued.

But the Kariithis understood that preserving quality required embracing change. The challenges of modern farming – climate variability, disease pressure, evolving market standards – demanded new approaches. Under their guidance, Karunguru Estate transformed from a colonial farm into a beacon of excellence, combining the quality standards of the past with the sustainable methods of the future.

The People Behind the Beans

Karunguru is a family in every sense. The Kariithi family guides strategic direction, but the estate’s heartbeat is its people: the hundreds of nonskilled and skilled pickers, processors, and agronomists who bring the coffee to life.

Many workers have spent decades here. Their deep knowledge is integral to their consistency; their pride is evident in every harvest. We empower our team through fair wages, safe housing, medical care, and education for their children.

When you choose Karunguru, you’re not just buying coffee. You’re supporting a community.

The Fertile Lands of Kiambu

Here, the altitude and rich red soils create a microclimate ideal for Arabica coffee. Our coffee is grown on mineral-rich soil, nourished by clean, consistent rainfall, and handpicked with care.

Shade trees protect the cherries, while the slow ripening develops complex sugars that translate to exceptional cup profiles.

Visitors remark on the tranquillity of our fields, row upon row of trees dotted with bright red cherries under the Kenyan sun. We invite you to walk among them, feel the soil, and experience the territory yourself.
